What I write
Some of my literary influences are those writers who shatter the rules of syntax to drill deep for the truths of humanity: William Faulkner, Cormac McCarthy, Toni Morrison, Thomas Bernard. I admire those whose realities are fluid and mysterious: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Lidia Yuknavitch, Leslie Marmon Silko, Jon Fosse. Some of my favorites are fun, like Haruki Murakami and John Irving, Chuck Palahniuk. And more.
My style sometimes embraces surreal and psychological exploration, sometimes a noir esthetic, sometimes it's humorous with a satirical bent, but I generally strive to inspire readers to think a bit differently, a bit more deeply, while hoping to entertain them enough to keep reading.
My middle grade fantasy novel still looking for a publisher
Diamond Mountain spins a tale of portals, alternate worlds and clone-like duplicates of the child characters, where two worlds need saving from human greed, and 10 year-old orphan Benya is their best hope. Highlighting the bonds of friendship and family through thick or thin, the book is at times adventurous and fun, sometimes more melancholy and tender.
I teach college English (where I try to involve students in literary discussions outside class), and in my spare time sometimes I do some acting, sometimes I paint. I go to conferences (such as where I met Chuck Palahniuk), and I like outdoorsy activities too, including gardening (we have lots of flowers in South Texas!)
